Saudi Arabia Backs U.N. Role in South LebanonThe Saudi government on Monday expressed support for the role of the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in south Lebanon where the Israeli occupation forces had just withdrew.Saudi Information Minister Fuad Bin Abdel-Salam Faresi was quoted by the Saudi News Agency as saying after a cabinet meeting that his government "followed closely the reports on the withdrawal of the Israeli troops from south Lebanon". "The withdrawal ended the Israeli occupation of such dear part of the Lebanese territories. The Saudi government congratulates the brotherly Lebanese people and government on such great victory," Faresi said. "After Israel's compliance with the will of the international community expressed in the U.N. Security Council resolutions No. 425 and 426, we hope that the Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity will be respected," he added. "Israeli should not make the security of its northern borders a pretext for launching attacks on the Lebanese people and territories and holding Lebanon responsible for security while Israel knows the country can not shoulder such responsibility in the absence of fair, comprehensive and permanent peace in the region," the minister pointed out. "What we have to underscore in this regard is the role of the UNIFIL in south Lebanon under the provisions of the U.N. resolutions No.425 and 426," Faresi added, noting that "the Saudi government expresses support for the efforts aimed at reinforcing UNIFIL and raising its efficiency."
