Soeharto Undergoes Corruption Investigation Again

Former Indonesian President Soeharto underwent investigation again for corruption charges on Monday at his residence, but the examining was ceased due to his bad health condition.

"Soeharto's blood pressure rose up to 170/80 mm hg after he answered 24 long and complicated questions (from prosecutors)," Soeharto's lawyer Juan Felix Tampubolon said after the questioning. "The process of questioning ran smoothly but it has affected Soeharto's bad health," Tampubolon added.

A member of medical team observing the health condition of the former president, Soepardi Sudibyo confirmed that doctors asked the prosecutors of the AGO to cease the questioning due to Soeharto's bad health condition.

After stepping down from his presidential office in May 1998, Soeharto was hospitalized twice last year, once for stroke that left his speech slurred and a second time for a bleeding ulcer.

Meanwhile, students protesters demanding that Soeharto stand trial immediately have clashed several times with riot police near Soeharto's residence in central Jakarta.

Soeharto has been put under city arrest and was banned from leaving the country since early April.

Officials said the AGO is considering to move the 78-year-old man to a secure state-protected location and he may be put under house arrest soon.
