Israel Threatens Powerful Revenge Against Hezbollah If Attacked

Israel will make a powerful response to the Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas and their "god-fathers" if the guerrilla group attacks northern Israel from Lebanon, said a senior Israeli diplomat in an article published in newspaper Le Figaro on Monday.

"This response will not only be aimed at these terrorists who perpetuate the attack, but also against these people who help, support and allow terrorist organizations to operate against Israel from Lebanon," said Eytan Bentsur, the general director of the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

He said that it is now "more effective" to protect the security of Israel from the internationally recognized frontier than from a security zone set up by Israel in Lebanon.

Bentsur said that the pullout of Israeli troops from south Lebanon will also "deprive terrorist attacks of their so-called legitimacy."

Through the pullout, Israel also expects to put an end to the attacks by Hezbollah guerrillas, who he said are commanded by people not in Lebanon but elsewhere.

Israel completed its pullout from its self-imposed security zone in southern Lebanon last week after a 22-year occupation of Lebanon's southern border area.
