East China Province Makes Efforts to Stop Stowaways

A group of U.S. and Canadian immigration experts were recently invited to lecture frontier inspection officials in the coastal province of Fujian in east China.

They instructed the Chinese officials in methods for distinguishing genuine passports and related documents from forged ones during the four-day training course.

Local sources said this was only part of Fujian's efforts to crack down on the increasing number of stowaway attempts in recent years.

The province has often been used by so-called "snakeheads," border crossings organizers, to help people illegally emigrate to Japan, the United States, Canada, and other countries.

Local police have intensified their efforts to stop these activities in recent years, and seized a total of 2,173 illegal emigrants in 218 cases last year.

The number of stowaways soared 60.1 percent last year, although the number of cases declined by 6.8 percent, a local police source said.
