China Joins in Global EconomyAttendants of the APEC 2000 China Forum which opened on May 28 agreed that with China's entry into the World Trade Organization pending, it will become part of the global economy.Zhang Zhigang, vice-minister of the State Economic and Trade Commission, and the President of the Forum, said that China will face more fierce competition on the global market with free trade and investment playing a bigger role. It will also provide China's enterprises with more opportunities for economic and technological cooperation with their partners in the world, added Zhang. He noted that China has long been an active member of the APEC, and has adopted a series of measures to promote economic and technical cooperation within the Asian Pacific Region. Long Yongtu, chief negotiator from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, said that economic globalization will provide new opportunities for economic development. China has to join the process of the economic globalization if it wants to be part of the world economy. He noted that China has made great progress in three areas, namely, adopting market economy, gradually opening its market and abiding by international economic and trade rules. Timothy Ong, APEC Business Advisory Council Chairman for 2000, said that China's progress is one of the important factors for APEC's progress, adding that China will play a more important role in the global economy in the future. |
