Official Warns Against Redundant Construction Projects in Developing the West
An official from the State Economic and Trade Commission today warned against construction of redundant projects in the development of the vast western China.
Zhang Xiaoqiang, director of the department of foreign investment, suggested at the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation ( APEC) 2000 China Forum that the guiding role of the market should be fully tapped and respected, in order to avoid repetitive construction.
Moreover, enterprises should utilize their advantages, and local governments should help facilitate the flow of information and technology, he said, adding that blind investment can be effectively avoided in this way.
While admitting that the strategy to develop western China will, to a great extent, enlarge domestic demand, Zhang pointed out that blindly increasing industrial projects might spark a new round of repetitive construction.
