Prodi Expects EU-China Trade to Increase

The European Commission President Roman Prodi said Saturday he expects a remarkable increase in trade between the European Union and China following the latter's entry into the World Trade Organization ( WTO).

The EU-China accord signed on May 19 on China's accession to the WTO is in the interest of both sides, he said. He expressed the belief that China will soon become a full member of the global trade body.

"It is an important moment for China's WTO accession," Prodi told a press conference held on the sidelines of the 30th annual meeting of the International Management Symposium.

The chief of the EU's executive body also said that the United States Senate would approve China's permanent normal trade relations status just as the lower house did on Wednesday.
