Mass Organizations Voice Support for Statement on Taiwan

China's major mass organizations gathered in Beijing Friday to voice their strong support for the government's recent statement on the issue of Taiwan.

They called on the Taiwan authorities to size up the situation, go with the historical tide, and embrace the one-China principle.

The statement, issued on May 20 by the Taiwan Work Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, expounded on the mainland's position on the issue of Taiwan.

Zhang Junjiu, vice-president of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, said at a forum here that no compromises or concessions will be allowed on the question of the one-China principle.

The ultimate reunification of the motherland conforms to the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation. Trade unions on both sides of the Taiwan Straits should work together to see that reunification happens as soon as possible, Zhang said.

Gu Xiulian, vice-president of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), said that the one-China principle is the touchstone of whether or not the Taiwan authorities will continue to promote " independence" for Taiwan.

If the Taiwan new leader sticks to the Lee Teng-hui path, the cross-Straits relations will undoubtedly suffer, and so will the interests of the entire Chinese nation.

Bayinqolu, secretary of Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Youth League, said that the Taiwan leader's evasive attitude toward the one-China principle showed that he refuses to accept it.

Young people on both sides of the Straits should join hands in opposing "Taiwan independence" and in striving for the revitalization of the entire Chinese nation, Bayinqolu said.
