Large Numbers of Chinese Farmers Move to Urban Centers

A recent survey indicates migration of a large number of farmers to urban areas in China as a result of the country's reform and opening-up endeavor in the past more than two decades.

The survey, conducted by the China Economic Climate Monitoring Center among 18,700 rural families, shows that 17.2 percent of families have one member working outside, 4.1 percent have two members working outside and one percent have three or more family members working outside.

At the same time, families with one member working in local township enterprises account for 5.8 percent of the surveyed farmers.

Analysts said that this has eased the pressure of surplus rural labor, raised the income of farmers, and fueled national economic growth by facilitating urbanization in China.

However, urbanization in the country still has a long way to go, and experts call for the improvement of education in rural areas.
