Tibetans Care About Forest Protection

Deputies to the on-going Third Session of the Seventh Regional People's Congress of Tibet submitted a bill on protecting natural forest on Thursday.

The bill was put forward by a group of deputies in Nyingchi Prefecture. "It represents the aspirations of 2.5 million people of various ethnic groups in Tibet," said a delegate.

The forest zone in Tibet lies in a river valley in Nyingchi covering 9.86 percent of the region's total area. Most of trees in the zone are ancient or rare species.

Regulations on forest protection will not only protect bio- diversity in Tibet but also keep the region a unique highland tourist resort.

Wang Dahai, an official of the bill committee, said if the bill is adopted, it will guarantee the protection of natural forests in Tibet.
