Sweden, China to Augment Environmental Cooperation

Sweden and China will step up their cooperation in environmental protection, Swedish Vice Prime Minister Lena Hjelm-Wallen and Director of the Chinese State Environmental Protection Administration Xie Zhenhua said Friday.

They made the promise during their meeting here, according to an official with the visiting Chinese delegation.

They agreed that it is necessary for the two countries to work more closely with each other in the sector, because the solution of environmental problems is based on international cooperation. Hjelm-Wallen expressed her hope that the experiences which Sweden obtained in the process of developing its economy could be helpful to China's development.

She recalled her recent China visit, aimed at marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations, as impressive.

On his part, Xie briefed the vice premier on the work done in handling problems of pollution and environmental conservation in China.

He said that Sweden and China have developed "good cooperation" in this field, lauding that Sweden, which hosted the 1972 U.N. meeting on mankind and environment, has made contributions to the protection of the global environment.

The Chinese director, who arrived here on Wednesday, also met with Swedish Minister for Environment Kjell Larsson, discussing ways of fortifying globe-wide cooperation in environmental conservation.

Xie is scheduled to attend the Global Ministerial Environment Forum, sponsored by the U.N. Environment Program, on May 29-31 in the southern city of Malmo.
