Vice-Premier Attends Anniversary Rally at Beijing UniversityChinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen attended a rally at Beijing University Friday to mark the fifth anniversary of the establishment of the school's Institute of International Relations.Qian, also president of the institute, said that China's reform, opening up, and modernization drive have entered into a new phase, which calls for further study of the international situation and fostering of special talent. He said he hoped that the institute will build a high-quality education system, and turn out more and better graduates as well as academic achievements. Lei Jieqiong, former vice-chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and a professor at the university, attended the celebration, which also marked the 40th anniversary of the founding the university's international politics department. The Institute of International Relations has become a major base in the country for training of exceptional scholars in the study, application and teaching of global studies and foreign affairs. Over the past 40 years, the prestigious university has given degrees in international relations to more than 5,600 graduates, postgraduates, Ph.D.'s and foreign students.
