Riots in Nigeria Able to Scare Away Investors: President

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has intervened in the renewed riots in the northern city of Kaduna, saying the violence was capable of frightening prospective investors, The Guardian newspaper said Friday.

It quoted the president as saying that religious disputes were very dangerous and that he preferred to work quietly behind the scenes to resolve them.

Obasanjo made the remarks after his closed-door emergency meeting with Governor of Kaduna State Ahmed Makarfi on Thursday in the capital Abuja, following the violence between Christians and Muslims that left more than 300 dead in the city.

The presidency source declined to give details of the meeting, except saying that the discussion between the president and the governor was " frank, sincere and decisive".

Meanwhile, a 70-member delegation of the House of Representatives visiting Kaduna on Thursday urged the Federal and Kaduna State governments to do everything within their power to ensure that the latest round of mayhem was the very last one in Kaduna.

The legislators, led by Deputy Speaker Chibudom Nwuche, decried the avoidable loss of lives and property in the senseless violence.

Troops and police restored order on Thursday in the city ravaged by the clashes which erupted on Monday.

The religious conflict in Kaduna in February over the proposed implementation of Islamic law of Sharia in the state has claimed thousands of lives and caused serious property damages.
