UNIFIL Begins Patrol in Liberated South Lebanon

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon Friday morning began its patrol mission in south Lebanon in the wake of Israeli withdrawal, Oriental radio reported Friday.

A group of UNIFIL patrolled the abandoned position of Beaufort Castle Friday morning. A UNIFIL officer said the peacekeeping troops will begin to implement the patrol mission in south Lebanon in line with the U.N. Resolution 425.

Lebanese security sources said UNIFIL will inspect some abandoned positions in central sector of south Lebanon in a bid to deploy peacekeeping force there.

The U.N. Security Council Resolutions 425 and 426 stipulated that UNIFIL oversee Israeli withdrawal from occupied south Lebanon and help Lebanese government restore peace and security in this region.

U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan has submitted a report to the Security Council, proposing to expand UNIFIL from now 4,513 peacekeepers to approximately 7,935.
