Shanghai's Pudong to Employ More Talented People

Shanghai's Pudong New Area, an emerging financial and trade zone set up in the early 1990s, will employ 200,000 talented people from both home and abroad over the next five years.

Specialists in areas like management, finance, trade, insurance, tourism, law and various high-tech industries are the most sought after.

Pudong, aiming to become an international center of finance and trade in the new century, has maintained an average annual growth rate of over 20 percent over the past 10 years, with gross domestic product reaching 80 billion yuan (about US$9.63 billion) in 1999.

An official with the administration of Pudong said the area will enter a comprehensive development phase in 2001.

Although more than 200,000 Chinese and foreign professionals have already been hired during the past decade, the official said, the area is still short of talented people, especially those in agriculture, finance, health care, accounting, statistics, law, and high technology.

At least some 50,000 experts are needed for its high-tech industries including information technology and bio-pharmaceuticals, according to the official.
