ROK to Play a Role in West China's Development

Kwon Byong-hyon, ambassador of the Republic of Korea (ROK) to China, has said Thursday that his country will play a role in the development of China's western regions.

During a recent tour of the region, Kwon said that recent years have witnessed rapid development of ROK-China economic cooperation. However, the ROK's investment focused on China's developed southeast regions, he said.

China's decision on the strategy of developing its central and western regions offered an opportunity for ROK to invest in China' s west, he said in an interveiw.

He said that there is a bright prospect for the cooperation between the ROK and Gansu Province in northwest China because the ROK is competitive in the fields of automobiles, electronics and machine building, and has experience in the infrastructure sector.

The country is interested in cooperating with the province in the hi-tech field, traditional Chinese medicine and exploration of mineral resources, he added.

The ROK is also interested in the ecological protection in Gansu, he said.

ROK has offered the province a long-term preferential loan of 50 million U.S. dollars for upgrading its running water system. A feasibility study is underway for building a forest belt in the province, with an annual investment of one million U.S. dollars from the ROK side.
