All Social Undertakings in Tibet Flourishing

The Tibet Autonomous Region devotes major efforts to developing science and education, with all social undertakings flourishing, reports from the third session of the seventh Tibetan People's Congress says.

A senior official from Tibetan government said that, fund put into science and education by departments at all levels of the region reached 35.87 and 623 million yuan respectively, an increase of 6 and 20 percent over the precious year. Of preschool children, 83.4 percent entered schools, 2.1 percent higher than last year. Illiteracy among young and middle-aged people dropped to 42 percent. School facilities and education quality further improved, and vocational education strengthened.

Fresh progress has been made in the development of hi-tech industries, introduction, transformation, and research of scientific and technological achievements, which made a greater contribution to the economic growth.

New development has been achieved in Tibetan literature and art, the press and publishing, radio, film, and television, family planning, public health, social and scientific research and other undertakings. A project aiming at introducing radio and television to all villages has been started, with the regional radio coverage rate reaching 68.6 percent, and television 63.3 percent. The Sixth Traditional Sports Meeting for Ethic Minorities in Lasa part was also successfully held last year, with Tibetan athletes achieving first place in gold medal numbers, total medal numbers and total scores.
