Chinese Scientists on Study Tour Around World's Tallest Peak

A group of 15 Chinese scientists and journalists left Beijing on Thursday heading for Qomolangma (Everest), the world's tallest peak, to study the local environment there.

The team, including seven scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), is expected to reach their destination by the end of this month.

The expedition is aimed at initiating a 10-year program to monitor the environment in the Himalayas and the Qomolangma area, said Zou Han, head of the team and a professor at the Atmospheric Physics Institute of the CAS.

Monitoring the environmental changes in the area is of great importance for studying global environmental changes, according to Ye Duozheng, an academician with the CAS and one of the initiators of the program.

During their trip, the scientists are expected to monitor the local environment by flying high-altitude balloons and collecting environmental samples and other data.
