The China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF) on may 25 started selling albums containing sets of gilded playing cards to raise money for the Project Hope, China's largest non-governmental welfare project.
The back of each number and face card contains a poem from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and was inscribed and drawn by well-known Chinese calligraphers and painters. The jokers bear pictures of the dragon and phoenix, the favorite symbols of two emperors, Li Zhi of the Tang Dynasty and Zhao Gou of Song Dynasty (960-1279). Only 2,000 copies of the albums were issued.
The CYDF presented the first and second-run copies of the albums to the Museum of Chinese History and the Palace Museum for their permanent collections. Diplomatic envoys from the United Nations and European countries in Beijing also received the gift albums.
The CYDF plans to sell the albums in 20 cities both in China and overseas. All the money collected will be donated to Project Hope, a charity which returns dropouts back to school.
