CNOOC, CAS Sign Scientific Cooperation Agreement

The China National Offshore Corporation (CNOOC) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Thursday signed a letter of intent on scientific and technological cooperation from 2001 to 2005.

According to CNOOC General Manager Wei Liucheng, offshore oil and gas exploration is a high-tech sector, and the country must solve a series of key high-tech problems to pave the way for massive offshore oil and gas development.

These technologies include offshore oil recovery, multi-wave seismic data collection, and offshore oil drilling.

CAS President Lu Yongxiang noted that the CAS has always paid great attention to solving key scientific and technological problems in the country's important economic construction projects.

The CAS has achieved remarkable scientific research results in offshore oil and gas exploration, geological and environmental monitoring and appraisal, as well as many other offshore oil technologies.

Both sides expressed the desire to apply scientific research results to offshore oil production as soon as possible in a bid to meet the target of enhancing oil and gas output equivalent to 40 million tons of oil by the year 2005.
