Northeast Grain Base Focuses on QualityNortheast China, a major grain production base in China, is shifting from quantity to quality in order to make grain production more profitable.Liaoning Province plans to establish a quality seed base with 400,000 yuan (US$48,200). According to a sample survey, maize with rich oil, lysine, and starch will be widely planted in the province. The acreage for soy beans and potatoes will increase by 666,700 hectares, to account for one fifth of cultivated land in the province. Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces will practice crop rotation in planting soy beans and maize. Northeast China yields the best soy beans in the country. However, the output of soy beans does not exceed various kinds of grains. Consequently, China had to import more than three million tons of soy beans each year. Jilin will subsidize soy bean planters with 138 million yuan (US$16.6 million) this year. Foreign businesspeople are welcomed to join agricultural reforms in Liaoning Province. The provincial government hopes to invite foreign partners to invest in the processing of farm products, crop planting, environmental protection, and the agriculture high-tech sector. |
