Taiwan Authorities Urged to Abandon Splittism

China's top legislator Li Peng Wednesday called on the newly elected Taiwan leaders to follow the historical trend, abandon the idea of splittism, and take the bright road towards peaceful reunification.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress, touched upon the Taiwan issue during a meeting with former Singapore President Ong Teng Cheong in Beijing, and said the new leaders of the Taiwan authorities have avoided or taken a vague attitude towards the one-China principle in their recent remarks.

Li gave high marks to the smooth growth of Sino-Singaporean relations, and spoke of Ong's contributions to these relations, expressing the hope that Ong, as an experienced statesman, will make continuous efforts in this regard.

Ong said the relationship between Singapore and China has always been sound, and voiced the hope that more mutually beneficial cooperation will be conducted in new fields.

Ong is currently visiting China at the invitation of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.
