WTO Chief Hails US Passage of China Trade Bill

Mike Moore, director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Thursday hailed the passage by the US House of Representatives of a bill to extend permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) with China.

"I am delighted that the U.S. House of Representatives has approved Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China," Moore said in a statement.

"This is a vital step" for China to join the WTO, Moore noted.

Moore also expressed his hope that "the U.S. Senate will also approve PNTR when it votes on the matter in the coming weeks."

The U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday afternoon passed the bill on permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) with China, with a vote of 237-197 after more than seven hours' heated debate.
