Macao Telecom Market to Open Wider to Investors

The government of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) is planning some effective measures to ensure that more investors have fair competition in the local telecommunication market.

Government officials said that new license for mobile phone operation is expected to be issued in early June, and more telecom services should get open gradually.

As both mobile and fixed phone services are held exclusively by the Macao Telecommunication Company, new proprietors of mobile phone service will have reasonable fees in connection with the fixed telephone network, official sources said.

For the existence of new competitors, current mobile phone users will be free to choose mobile phone service providers together with their original phone numbers.

In the meantime, the government encourages new investors to develop broadband Internet access.
