China Sets on Torch Projects

The Hi-tech Industry Development Center under the Ministry of Science and Technology lately introduced altogether 1047 state-level torch program projects to news media. Of these itemized, 58 have been listed as key ones in China this year.

Li Linxi, chief engineer of the Hi-tech Center said that 2000 state-level torch program projects are noted as those: self developed, of a high tech level, of good marketability, following state policy guidance and catering to future development trend. There are 174 items listed as state-level torch program in demand for western development.

Software items for developing electronics and information industry and digital control processing items used for electromechanical integration occupy a large proportion among the program items. Of 136 items contributing to environment protection and tapping of new types of energy resources, 10 are for auto tail gas control. These represent the development focus of China's electronic information, bioengineering, new medicine, new material and environmental protection.

Items declared by state-owned enterprises have registered an increase over last year. Of 28 items declared by Shenyang, capital of Liaoning province, state-owned large and medium-sized enterprises undertook 10, accounting for 30% of the total.

Zhang Jinan, head of the Center said that torch program is intended for promoting hi-tech industrialization and for higher economic returns to be sought than from ordinary industry items. He hopes wide support be extended to state torch program by financial and investment institutions in China.
