Distance Education Projected in China's West

Students deep among mountains in faraway Guizhou can attend same classes with teachers in Beijing Jingshan School on computers, they can also send their homework for check by teachers who are thousands of miles away by e-mail. People may liken this to an old "fairy tale" that will be made true in China thanks to distance education going to be developed in the country's west.

China has planned to use 360 million yuan of investment in the coming two years for developing distance education in its west. Distance education is a new education method by using modern communication and computer technology. An integrated multimedia network, fully digitalized and interactive, it spans time and space barrier. Western China extends over a vast expanse of land, heavily populated, with an underdeveloped economy and culture behind other areas in China. Distance education will be of great significance for developing the country's west.

Following plans for distance education construction there will be brought into being a wide computer network to link up all local educational institutions, colleges, universities and middle and primary schools for a general raise of education level and of teaching quality in the whole of the country's west.
