Chinese Scientists Concern Qomolangma AreaIt is recently announced that Chinese scientists will monitor the Qomolangma Peak (also called Mountain Everest) and its neighbor area for 10 years. In the opinion of experts, this action, just like fixing an "insight" on the "Roof of the World", will monitor and research the change of the global environment.Scientists will monitor the object in the way of establishing automatic observation system, releasing sounding balloons, collecting samples of environment, gathering of hydrological and meteorological materials, etc. They plan to issue a report on the environmental situation of the Mountain Everest and Himalayas area each year. Authoritative experts point out that this is of important scientific significance and will provide basis for environmental change and protection in the development of China's west. Qumulangma Peak or Mt. Everest, just like the North and South Polar, is one of the cleanest places on the earth. The environmental situation in the area of Qumulangma and Himalayas is regarded as the primary condition of Chinese as well as the global environment. In recent years, the living environment of human beings is worsening in a global scope and the environment in Himalayas area is also seriously effected. Chinese Academy of Science has ever carried out environmental monitoring on the north slope in 1975, 1980, 1992, 1994, 1995 and 1997. However, due to the special geographical features and living environment of this area, there is no long-term environment monitoring station here and no long-term environmental monitoring plan too. In recent years, Chinese scientists found a "Low Valley of Ozone" in the summer sky of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. They will observe and research the vertical distribution of ozone in this area and carry out observation of ozone through sounding balloon for the first time on the north slope of Mt. Everest to find out the changing circumstance and mechanism of ozone in this area and to estimate the influence of being lack of ozone to climate environment. On June 5, the International Day of Environment, scientists will set off to Qumulangma and its neighbor area for the 10-year-long monitoring and research program.
