Guilin Hosts International Symposium on Renewable Energy
Guilin, a scenic city in south China 's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is currently hosting a three- day international symposium on renewable energy.
Topics discussed during the symposium which opened on Tuesday, include how to step up the development of renewable energy as the world faces deteriorating environment problems.
P.J. Adam, chairman of the World Energy Council Executive Assembly, pointed out at the symposium that the world's demand for energy will increase by 40 percent in the next 20 years, with the majority of the demand coming from developing countries.
The world is facing the urgent need to utilize more renewable energy because of environmental pollution, he said.
Renewable energy includes solar energy, wind energy, water energy, methane, terrestrial heat and tidal energy.
The Chinese government has paid great attention to the research and development of renewable energy since 1980s.
Over 170 representatives from China, Japan, Australia, Israel, and 17 other countries and regions are attending the symposium sponsored by the China State Commission of the World Energy Council.
