Men's Beach Volleyball World Tour Held in Macao

The Macao Beach Volleyball Men's Open, one leg of the Beach Volleyball World Tour 2000 of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), was launched here Wednesday with the participation of 55 teams from 26 countries and regions.

Qualification tournament will be held Wednesday and Thursday by way of double elimination. The teams are placed in the bracket according to their points in the FIVB World ranking. After one loss the team moves to the losers bracket and competes until it loses a second match, when it is eliminated.

The winning teams will have the main draw on May 26 and 27. And semi-final and final matches are to be held on May 28.

The champion team will obtain a prize money of 26,000 U.S. dollars and the second-place team will get 18,000 U.S. dollars. Three teams from the inland areas of China take part in the beach volleyball competition.

In view of Macao's outstanding organizing ability of the Women World Grand Prix for six years, FIVB has given Macao the right to host the men's beach volleyball this year and the year 2001.
