Israel Troops Quit Lebanon After 22 YearsThe last of Israel's soldiers in south Lebanon came home on Wednesday, ending a military occupation that cost 900 Israeli lives over 22 years.The last two men closed the gate of the Fatma border crossing at daybreak after a long night during which a stream of soldiers poured home in armoured vehicles. Minutes earlier, army spokesman Sharon Grinker said the soldier to shut the gate "will be the last Israeli soldier in south Lebanon." The armoured brigade officer who did so, Major Kobi Dostakam, told reporters: "It feels good. I hope it lasts." Soldiers cheered and applauded. |
