State Councilor Wu Yi will head a Chinese government delegation to attend the special session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) "Women 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the 21st Century", to be held in New York from June 5 to 9.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue announced this Tuesday, saying that Wu will attend the meeting and deliver a speech at the gathering, fully expounding China's policies and propositions concerning the development and advancement of global women undertakings. Wu will also meet with heads of relevant international organizations, added the spokeswoman.

As the host country of the UN Fourth World Conference on Women, China has always paid much attention to the work in the field of women and to raising the status of women. It also attaches great importance to the upcoming UNGA special session, Zhang said.
