China Drafts Energy Development Strategy for 21st CenturyChina is working out a comprehensive plan to step up rational and sustainable development of both conventional and renewable energy sources to meet the country's growing demand for energy in the 21st century.According to Huang Yicheng, chairman of the Executive Council of the China Energy Research Society (CERS), the energy sector will vigorously develop thermal, nuclear and hydro-electric power, as well as oil, gas, coal and other new and renewable energy sources. Addressing a two-day seminar on China's energy development strategy in the 21st century, the senior energy specialist said that China is planning to carry out a series of energy reforms focusing on developing natural gas and electricity in the western part of the country. In the coal sector, the focus of production will be shifted to China's western region. Efforts will be made to expand the Shenfu and Dongsheng coal fields between Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia, as well as improve coal transportation. The country will speed up the construction of terraced hydropower stations in river valleys and the construction of power stations near coal mines. In developing the oil industry, priority will be given to oil and gas exploration in western China and in offshore areas. He stressed that the country will pay great attention to both energy development and conservation in the 21st century. Along with the development of conventional energy sources, China will step up development of geothermal energy, solar energy and tidal energy to optimize the structure of energy consumption, he added. |
