Tibet Reaps High GDP Growth in 1999

The Tibet Autonomous Region has reaped a record high gross domestic product (GDP) in 1999 valued at RMB 10 billion, up 9.6% over the 1998 level.

The growth should be attributed to the steady development in farming and pasturing, according to figures released during the third session of the Seventh Tibet Autonomous Regional People's Congress, which opened in Lhasa on Monday.

The grain output in Tibet reported 922,000 tons in 1999, Meanwhile, the region's industrial volume reached RMB 998 million, up 6.4% over 1998.

The service industry has become a major driving force in the region's economy, last year the sector topped RMB 1.74 billion, up 10.2% over the previous year.

Tibet has seen a total of 448,000 domestic and overseas tourists and earned US$36.3 million in tourism, up 9.9% over the previous year.
