507 Kg Smuggled Ivory Seized in Shenzhen

Custom officials have seized over 500 kilograms of African ivory in China's southern city of Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong, according to the Beijing-based "Legal Daily".

This is the first ivory-smuggling case ever exposed in Shenzhen, the newspaper said.

The ivory was discovered on May 16, when officials from the Tongle Custom, attached to the Shenzhen Custom, carried out a routine check on an expressway linking Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong province, and Shenzhen.

During the check, the officials found a truck from Shenzhen carrying ten containers of goods that resembled white columns, which turned out to be African ivory.

The ivory, totaling 507 kilograms, were cut into pieces measuring about one meter in length, with the thickest one measuring 20 centi-meters in diameter.

"Legal Daily" didn't specify where the ivory came from and what the local authorities would do with it.

The ivory has been passed on to police for further investigation, together with two suspected smugglers, one of whom is from Hong Kong.

As China has signed a treaty to protect rare animals, ivory smuggling is a crime in China, who forbids ivory trade of any kind.
