Returned Overseas Chinese Oppose Separatism

Returned overseas Chinese leaders who attended a local forum Monday spelt out their strong opposition against separatism and "Taiwan independence", expressing their eagerness for reunification of the motherland.

The forum was jointly held by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress, the Subcommittee for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Compatriots and Overseas Chinese of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the Public Interest Party, and the All- China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese.

Almost 100 people attended the forum. The leaders criticized the new leader of Taiwan Province for his evasive and ambiguous position on the One-China Principle in his inaugural speech. The leaders supported the May 20 statement on the cross-straits issue by the general offices of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council.

They are of the same opinion that if the new leader of Taiwan is sincere enough he should give up any secessionist stance and return to the position of the One China Principle without any additional condition. Otherwise, he will be following the steps of Lee Teng-hui and become a criminal of the Chinese nation.
