CPPCC Chairman Meets Peruvian President

Li Ruihuan Meets Peruvian President
Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said in Lima Saturday that to develop the economy and uplift living standards are the central tasks for developing countries.

"It is also the fundamental method of administrating a country, "said Li while meeting Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori.

"As an old saying in China goes, 'if people get wealthy, a country will be more smoothly governed; if people feel happy, a country will be peaceful and harmonious.'"

In contrast, the legislator said, if people get poor, a country will be full of troubles; if people have a lot to complain about, a country will have a gloomy future.

Li warned that the most fearful thing for a country is that ordinary people have lost confidence in government and those in power have lost the heart of people.

"Thus, people in power should work hard to find ways to improve people's life and make them feel happy," he stressed.

The two leaders also exchanged views on further enhancing bilateral relations.

Fujimori expressed satisfaction with the development of the friendly cooperation between the two countries. He reiterated that his government will continue to insist on its "one China" policy and will continue to support China over the issue of human rights.

Fujimori expressed hopes that both sides will make efforts to seek closer cooperation in all fields.

Li, who arrived in Lima on Friday, also met with Prime Minister Alberto Bustamante and Congress President Martha Hildebrandt.

Peru is Li's last leg of his four-nation tour, which also took him to Canada, Venezuela, and Trinidad and Tobago.
