Water: Key to Development of China's West

The Subcommittee of Population, Resources and Environment of CPPCC held a symposium on development of China's west and water resources in Beijing from May 19 to 21.

Experts participating in the symposium pointed out that water resource is both a major content of the development of China's west, and a major restrictive factor, so it's a key problem that must be first solved

According to the symposium, the western region of China is the major fountainhead of China's major rivers, and soil erosion, desertification, ecological environment, water quality of rivers and the development and utilization of water and hydroelectric power resources not only affect the west of China, but also have a direct bearing on the flood disasters, the effective supply of water resources, and hydroelectric power, potable water sanitation and the atmospheric environment in the eastern and central regions. They also play an important part in improving the country's eco-environment, comprehensive harness of large rivers and the transfer of power from China's west to east. It's a complicated and systematic work to tackle the water problem of China's west for it involves agriculture, forestry, water conservancy, and meteorology. China must follow the road of sustainable development in accordance with the principle of bringing coordinated development of population, resources, environment and economic development.
