China Discovers 14th Century Firearms

Some blunderbusses made in the 14th century were recently discovered in Nanjing, capital of east China's coastal province Jiangsu.

The firearms, unearthed in a construction site near the Tongjimen area of Nanjing, were made in 1373, according to the markings on them.

The blunderbusses are 45 cm in length, and with the bores taking two thirds of the length, the firearms could have stronger shooting capacity than others of the same kind.

Experts say that the well-crafted weapons represent the highest level of firearm-making technology at that time in China.

Nanjing then was the capital and the economic and technological center of the country.
