China's Rural Enterprises Praised for Achievements

The rural enterprises in east China's Zhejiang Province have made remarkable achievements, an inspection team from the National People's Congress concluded on May 21.

The inspection team, headed by Buhe, vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, aimed to see how effectively the Law on Rural Enterprises is being enforced.

This is the first time the NPC Standing Committee has made such a review since the legislation took effect on January 1, 1997. After a week-long inspection, the lawmakers concluded that the rural industry in the province has played a major role in the rural economy.

In Zhejiang, rural enterprises feature flexible operation, high quality and market-orientation, and have contributed a lot to the prosperity and stability of the rural communities.

The province has 1.03 million township enterprises, with fixed assets totaling 497.7 billion yuan (about US$60 billion) .

The rural enterprises accounted for about 84 percent of the province's entire industrial output.

Despite the achievements, the province's rural enterprises need further restructuring and the Law on Rural Enterprises should be further enforced, the inspectors said.

The inspectors also suggested that the local governments provide better services and more support, and that the modern enterprise system and urbanization be deepened.

Official statistics shows that the rural enterprises have accounted for nearly one-third of China's gross domestic product. By the end of last year, there were a total of 20.71 million rural enterprises across the country, employing 127 million people.
