China, US Sign Environment Cooperation Accord

China and the United States signed Friday in Beijing a joint statement and pledged stronger cooperation on efforts to protect the environment.

The joint statement noted that China's entry into the WTO could advance its clean energy and environmental protection efforts by accelerating the greater use of environmentally sound technologies in China.

It also said the two countries intended to "work together to assure that any increased trade flows will not undercut natural resource management and species protection programmes."

The United States and China recognised that nations can achieve economic growth "while protecting the environment and taking actions to combat climate change," it said.

The joint statement was signed by China's minister of science and technology Zhu Lilan and US Ambassador Joseph Prueher.

US vice-president Gore said in a statement he was particularly pleased that China was declaring a new willingness to work with the United States in the international effort to address climate change.

"Only through cooperation and engagement can we hope to meet our pressing global environmental challenges," he said.
