Beijing City Helps Western China Train StudentsBeijing City is helping educational programs in western China through a five-year program, said sources from the city's education committee. The capital's colleges and universities will recruit more students from the western areas in the next five years, said local education committee's director Xu Xi'an. Today's "China Daily" reported that to fuel educational development in the relatively backward western areas, the Ministry of Education adopted a series of measures earlier this year. A major portion was to mobilize more developed provinces and cities to help poor areas advance their education development. Beijing is supposed to help Inner Mongolia, according to the ministry. This English newspaper said that Beijing-based colleges and universities will recruit an additional 100 students from Inner Mongolia this year. They will study such specialties as engineering, foreign languages, law and business management, skills that are needed in this ethnic region. In the next five years, Beijing's higher learning institutions will work with their counterparts in the west to undertake major scientific projects and to develop relevant technologies for the western areas, such as communications, water-saving irrigation and urban infrastructure, said Xu. In another development, Beijing's 18 counties and districts will send top teachers to work in the west for one to three years to help upgrade teaching in the region, Xu was quoted as saying. |
