Salvage Company Praised for Good Deed

A letter of thanks from Taiwan Yousheng Shipping Co Ltd reached Yantai Salvage yesterday. In the letter, the company expressed its appreciation to Yantai Salvage for saving its cargo ship Shengyong on April 25.

On 7:40 pm April 23, Shengyong, which was carrying 23 tons of goods and a crew of 22 were stranded at sea after it left Bayuquan Port in Yingkou City in Northeast China's Liaoning Province on its way to Gaoxiong Port in Taiwan Province.

The Shengyong sent out SOS signals on 9 pm April 24.

In response, Yantai Salvage sent two salvage tugs - Beihai 102 and Yanjiu 9 with seven salvage technical experts. Beihai 102 arrived at the scene at 3:30 am on April 25.

Technicians first made careful underwater inspections and then set a salvage scheme into operation. Beihai 102 prepared tug ropes before successfully salvaging the ship when the sea subsided.

"Thanks to the timely arrival of Beihai 102, everything turned out all right," said Wu Tingjiu, president of the Yantai Salvage. "Otherwise the results could have been tragic."

Located in Yantai, a coastal city in East China's Shandong Province, Yantai Salvage was established in 1974 and has grown into one of the largest marine salvage and ocean engineering companies in China, according to Wu.

It has more than 3,000 employees including 35 senior engineers, 1,250 seamen and 120 professional divers.

It also owns 43 vessels of various kinds. The company has successfully carried out thousands of comprehensive marine operations and saved 227 Chinese and foreign vessels and removed 63 sunken tankers, cargo carriers and drilling rigs.

Sources from the company said it also saved two foreign cargo ships recently.

On April 12, De'an tug helped a Korean cargo ship called Suzu near Weihai, a coastal city in East China's Shandong Province when the ship lost power.

On April 20, Yanjiu 8 saved a Panamanian cargo ship, Asama, that collided with a cargo ship from Belize. Asama was heavily damaged but safely reached port.
