298 Chinese Athletes Qualify for Sydney Games, More ExpectedAsian sports powerhouse China has seen 298 athletes in 23 events secure their berths at 2000 Sydney Olympic Games up till April 30 through various qualifying tournaments.Yuan Weimin, director general of the State Sports General Administration of China, said at a national conference on sports issues which is being held here on Friday. Chinese competitors will fight in another 10 Olympic qualifying tournaments in seven sports, including volleyball, swimming, track and field, tennis, modern pentathlon, judo and sailing, for more Olympic berths. Yuan was satisfied with Chinese athletes' results in the qualifying tournaments so far and expected them to harvest more Olympic tickets. "Generally speaking, our athletes' performance is satisfactory, they've done a good job," Yuan said. "We may have more athletes contending in Sydney than in any Olympic Games we have ever attended," he added. The 2000 Olympic Games will be held from September 15 to October 1 in Sydney, Australia. |
