Taiwan New Leader Lacks Sincerity:StatementThe "goodwill reconciliation" mentioned by the new leader of the Taiwan authorities in his speech delivered Saturday is short of sincerity, says an official statement released lately. The statement issued on authorization jointly by the Taiwan Work Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, points out that on the key issue of accepting the one China principle, the new leader adopted an evasive and ambiguous attitude. "Obviously, his 'goodwill reconciliation' lacks sincerity," the statement says. The one China principle is the basis for peaceful, steady development of across-strait relations, the statement notes. "Since the new leader of the Taiwan authorities expressed that he would not go in for 'Taiwan independence', he should have attached no condition to it. Still less should he have refuted the reality that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China by saying one China is something in 'future'." To accept the one China principle or not is the touchstone to test whether the Taiwan leader will safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity or continue to stubbornly pursue the separatist policy of "Taiwan independence", the statement says.
