Chinese Doctors Perform Heart Valve Replacement-Kidney Transplant

A Beijing hospital has reported success with its first heart valve replacement-kidney transplant operation performed recently.

According to the overseas edition of People's Daily today, the Beijing Anzhen Hospital, known for its pioneering in cardiovascular surgery, completed China's first double operation of the kind on March 3.

The patient, 28-year-old Yan Xiangguo, a farmer from north China's Hebei Province, suffered from serious kidney and heart damage and was bed-ridden.

Doctors worried that Yan, who had an enlarged left ventricle and failing kidneys, would not survive two separate operations, and decided to perform the surgeries one after the other.

A team of cardiovascular surgeons and urologists performed the 5 hour, 50 minute operation.

Yan's body resisted infection and has not rejected the new kidney. He was discharged from the hospital two weeks after the operation.
