The patient, 28-year-old Yan Xiangguo, a farmer from north China's Hebei Province, suffered from serious kidney and heart damage and was bed-ridden. Doctors worried that Yan, who had an enlarged left ventricle and failing kidneys, would not survive two separate operations, and decided to perform the surgeries one after the other.
