Portugal, Macao Discuss Bilateral Ties

Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio welcomed visiting Edmund Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR)Thursday, speaking highly of the successful return of Macao to China.

During a welcome speech at a banquet, President Sampaio said the successful return of Macao to the motherland on December 20, 1999 "has opened a new page in the multilateral relations between European Union-Portugal and China-Macao, and established a sound foundation for cordial relations between us."

Chief Executive Edmund Ho Haw Wah's visit to Portugal will " further promote mutual understanding and bilateral relations between Portugal and Macao SAR," Sampaio added. Edmund Ho Haw Wah held similar views of the Portuguese president, saying that his first visit to Portugal "was fruitful and beneficial and has enhanced the good relations between Portugal and Macao SAR."

The two leaders held discussions on further development of bilateral relations and cooperation in new fields. Macao will make more efforts to "develop multilateral relations with Portugal and the EU, including cooperation between manufacturing sectors," said Ho.

Ho also exchanged views on developing cooperation on science, technology and judicial sectors with Portugal Minister of Justice Antonio Costa, and Minister of Science and Technology Jose Mariano Gago.
