China Will Be Responsible WTO Member

President Jiang Zemin said Friday that China will surely be a responsible member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and play a constructive role in it once it gains membership.

Jiang made the remarks in Beijing this evening in a meeting with the European Union (EU) trade delegation led by its Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy.

Jiang said that once as member of the WTO, China will enjoy its rights and at the same time seriously honor its obligations, and abide by the WTO rules.

China and the EU have long-standing friendly relations, Jiang said, noting that the conclusion of Sino-EU agreement on China's WTO entry shows to the world that the two sides can arrive at an agreement on major strategic issues through consultations.

"Our endeavors to join the WTO demonstrate that China will open even wider to the outside world, and is fully prepared to promote economic and trade cooperation with all countries on the basis of equality and mutual benefit," Jiang said.

China's joining the WTO will contribute to the global multilateral trading system, he said.
