Power Generation by First Foreign-Owned Power Plant Expected

A grand ceremony was held at Meizhou Bay of Putian, Fujian Province to mark the opening of coal transportation sea line from Indonesia by Singapore Wanbang Shipping Company, indicating that the power plant at Meizhou Bay will be put into operation in the near future.

Meizhou Bay thermal power plant, the first of its kind exclusively foreign-owned, approved by the Chinese government, is a joint venture by US International Electricity Company, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other two foreign investors.

Loans borrowed from ADB and other 20 foreign banks totaled 6 billion yuan, taking 75% of investment made. Launched in 1998, with 720 thousand kilowatts of capacity built, the plant has entered into the phase of equipment installation and debugging. Two sets of power machinery with a generation capacity of 360 thousand kilowatts will be put into test operation in July and October.

It is estimated that Meizhou power plant has been designed with an annual consumption amount of 1.5 million tons of high-quality and environment-friendly coal, Singapore Wanbang Shipping Company has been put under responsibility for supply of coal fuel.
