Chinese Police Bust Gang Smuggling Drugs Concealed in Their Bodies

Hunan police, together with police from other Chinese provinces, recently busted a drug trafficking gang.

Thirty-nine suspected drug smugglers have been arrested. Police said that the case involves 69 farmers from 11 towns of Anxiang County, central China's Hunan Province.

Initial investigations found that the gang members had smuggled at least 40 kilograms of heroin into China concealed in their bodies. Police confiscated more than 4,000 grams of heroin and a sum of money for buying drugs.

Local police said that on May 28, 1999, Anxiang County police heard that a 30-year-old farmer was being treated in a local hospital because he had a bar-shaped object in his belly. Police found that the object was heroin stuffed inside condoms.

Police also discovered that some 70 farmers from Anxiang County were hired by a woman named Yang Changxiu, who gave money and provided traveling expenses for these farmers to buy heroin in Myanmar and smuggle the drug into Guangdong, a southern China province.

Police said that starting from December 1998, Yang had been in Guangdong where she provided capital, contacted with overseas drug dealers and arranged drug smuggling routes and sold drugs.
