Leader Emphasizes Cooperation in Environment ProtectionEnvironment is an issue that affects all and one's mistake in this regard will cause harm to everyone, visiting Chinese leader Li Ruihuan said Wednesday."So worldwide cooperation on environment protection must be strengthened," Li, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said during his meeting with President of Trinidad and Tobago Raymond Robinson. Li said the Chinese government has attached great importance to environmental protection in recent years and a considerable number of relevant laws have been worked out. Meanwhile, various kinds of measures such as forestation, water and soil conservation, and closing down factories with severe pollution have also been adopted, Li said, adding that these measures have so far produced a satisfactory result. Li, who is here for a three-day official visit, acknowledged problems exist in environmental protection in China, including weak consciousness of environmental protection, shortage of input, poor technology and industry. These have led to heavy pollution in some regions. "This situation has hindered the sustained economic and social development as well as the improvement of people's life," said Li. "International cooperation must be enhanced and concerted efforts must be made in this field," Li urged. People of all countries and regions in the world over are living on the same and only planet, Li said. To protect the environment means to protect ourselves. So developed countries that have accumulated sophisticated technologies and expertise in environmental protection should help developing countries to avoid making any unnecessary mistakes, Li said. Li promised that China will continue strengthening cooperation with every country around the world on environmental protection to turn the globe into a good place to work and live in, not only for themselves, but also for their future generations. On the same day, Li met with Foreign Minister Ralph Maraj and Senate President Ganace Ramdial of Trinidad and Tobago. They exchanged views on bilateral relations and issues of common concern. |
